Derek W. Smith Sr is a renowned Bahamian photographer whose career spans nearly half a century. He is celebrated for his role as a “visual historian,” capturing significant moments and figures in Bahamian history. One of his notable works includes a classic photograph of former Prime Minister Hubert A. Ingraham heading to the House of Assembly in 1992.

In recognition of his extensive contributions to visual storytelling, Derek Smith was welcomed into the Bahamian Project, an initiative dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of The Bahamas through photography.

Throughout his career, Smith has consistently documented the evolving landscape and prominent personalities of The Bahamas, solidifying his legacy as a pivotal figure in the nation’s visual history.

  1. Hi Derek–hardly recognized you without the hair–
    I think that you know that Eric Minns died in 2020, but I know he would love
    to have seen some more of you your beautiful photos.

      We remember well seeing your images in the Nassau Guardian and other publications in the 1980s and 1990s.
      Or bumping into you in the islands or at Junkanoo!! Both Nikon users!!
